Gorczynski Takes Steele Cage Crown

FRISCO, Texas -- King of the Cage veteran Joey
Gorczynski captured the Steele Cage MMA welterweight
championship, as he submitted Joe
Christopher with a modified guillotine choke in the Steele Cage
3 main event on Friday at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter.
In the first round, Christopher came out and pressed Gorczynski to the cage. What ensued could only be described as a grappling battle. Four of the first five minutes were spent on the ground exchanging submission attempts. Gorczynski set up guillotine after guillotine attempt, and Christopher continued to fend them off.
Late in the first round, Gorczynski had Christopher locked in a
choke, and it appeared as though Christopher tapped. However, the
referee did not see it, and the fight continued.
The second round was more of a submission wrestling clinic than a fight. Gorczynski pushed the tempo, and after several neck crank and guillotine attempts, he finally caught Christopher in a modified guillotine choke. Christopher raised his hands from the bottom to show nothing was wrong but tapped out just seconds later. The end came 3:52 into round two.
Meanwhile, Joseph Sandoval stopped Douglas Frey on punches 2:24 into round two in the co-main event.
Sandoval withstood a first round beating that would have put down lesser men. Frey caught Sandoval in a muay Thai clinch and landed several devastating knees to the face. When Sandoval went down, Frey capitalized and slammed more knees into his ribs. Back on the feet, Frey landed more knees and more leg kicks. Sandoval collapsed to his knees several times but never looked to be out of the fight. He came back in the first round, landing several punishing left hands and shaking Frey in the closing moments.
The second round started with Frey landing hard leg kicks, but Sandoval, true to his slow starts, came back, landed a left hook-right hand combination and dropped Frey. After Frey got back to his feet, Sandoval shadowed him around the cage. He landed more shots until Frey could no longer stand. The referee stepped in soon after.
