Jose Pedraza, Amanda Serrano Put Titles on the Line Jan. 14 on Showtime

When considering the lineage and history of the all-time great world champions from Puerto Rico -- Felix Trinidad, Miguel Cotto, Carlos Ortiz, Wilfredo Benitez, etc. -- it’s astonishing to know that the country currently only has two world champs. Right now, only Jose Pedraza and Amanda Serrano hold world titles in boxing and both will showcase their skills on Showtime on Jan. 14.

IBF super featherweight champ Pedraza (22-0. 12 KOs) will defend his title against murderous puncher Gervonta Davis (16-0, 15 KOs) in the main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. “Sniper” won his title in June 2015 by edging Andrey Klimov over 12 rounds and has defended it twice. But with Roman Martinez and McJoe Arroyo both losing their titles this year, the pressure is one the young Puerto Rican to maintain his position as the only male world title from the island country.

“Being the only male Puerto Rican-born world champion is something that I’m very proud of,” said Pedraza. “It is also a big weight that I carry on my shoulders. I know that I have to give my best because I am not just a champion of the ring. I am a champion of my island of Puerto Rico. Knowing that all of Puerto Rico will be in there with me encourages me to give my all every time I step into the ring.”

The Pedraza-Davis battle will serve as the co-feature to the super middleweight world championship unification bout between titlists Badou Jack (20-1-2, 12 KOs) and James DeGale (23-1, 14 KOs). The action will air live on Showtime beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.

Serrano (30-1-1, 23 KOs) has captured world titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight and will aim to defend her WBO super bantamweight crown against Yazmin Rivas in the co-feature. Her bout will also be the first nationally-televised women’s world title bout since Mary Jo Saunders took on Valerie Mahfood in 2007. Serrano-Rivas will anchor the Showtime Extreme-televised portion of the card, which airs live on the cable network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
