Pulev, who came up short against then-IBF world champ Wladimir Klitschko via knockout in November 2014, knows a win over Johnson will help align for another chance at heavyweight gold. He has won four straight bouts since losing to Klitschko, including back-to-back wins over veterans Dereck Chisora and Samuel Peter.
“My number one goal is to fight for the world title,” Pulev (24-1, 13 KOs), a 2008 Olympian, commented, “I will take another step towards achieving this goal. I’m already training hard to prove I am worthy to fight again for the heavyweight crown. Johnson is a tough opponent. You must only look at his resume to tell this will be a real challenge. He has shared the ring with many World class fighters like Vitali Klitschko and Anthony Joshua.”
New Jersey native Johnson (30-7-1, 14 KOs) has struggled as of late, having lost to Chisora, Tyson Fury and Joshua, but he is coming off a dominant win over Jamal Woods on March 11. “Kingpin” challenged Klitschko for the Ukrainian’s WBC heavyweight strap in 2009 when the American was still unbeaten and hung on until the final bell, one of the few men to have not been knocked out by the future Hall of Fame inductee. He also holds a TKO win over former WBA world heavyweight champion and Mike Tyson victim Bruce Seldon.
