Miguel Vazquez Edges Erick Bone via Unanimous Nod in PBC on FS1 Main Event

Premier Boxing Champions returned to the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio Saturday night for another edition of PBC on FS1. In the main event, former IBF lightweight world champion Miguel Vazquez had his hands full with Erick Bone, but his world-class experience proved to be too much for the Ecuadorian to overcome.

Vazquez (36-5, 13 KOs) never had his foe in any real danger, but he out-boxed him from the outside and out-slugged him in close. The two welterweights fought in exciting spurts throughout, but the action never truly was sustained throughout the 10 rounds. Still, the Mexican former champ was in control for the duration of the duel and clearly won enough rounds to earn the judges’ favor when it was all said and done.

In the end, Vazquez won a unanimous decision via tallies of 97-93, 96-94 and a somewhat absurd 99-91 to keep him afloat in the title picture. “Titere” intimated before the clash that if he was victorious, a “big fight” was looming, though he never revealed who the opponent would be. Bone, for his efforts, fell to 16-4 with 8 KOs.

Brandon Figueroa looked terrific in his televised junior featherweight bout against Jonell Nieves, winning via TKO in the fifth. The young Texan was all over his adversary from the start and pounded away at his body whenever he could. Finally, a pair of left hooks to the guts dropped the Puerto Rican and though he climbed back to his feet, the fight was essentially removed from him.

Nieves (6-3, 4 KOs) tried to fend the young lion off, but a barrage of punches to the head and body felled him again, which prompted referee Rafael Ramos to halt it. The official time of the stoppage came at 1:48 of the frame, allowing Figueroa to rise to 7-0 with his fifth career knockout.

Young featherweight contender Miguel Flores looked tremendous against longtime veteran Ruben Tamayo in the opening bout of the telecast, winning a lopsided unanimous decision over 10 rounds. Flores (20-0, 9 KOs) battered Tamayo from all angles and landed the much harder, more telling punches throughout. Tamayo (24-9-4, 16 KOs) never relented in his bid to kill his four-fight losing streak, but the promising Flores was just too quick and powerful for him to handle. Flores won via scores of 100-90 and 98-92 (twice).
