Sadam Ali to Fight Johan Perez on ESPN2 July 29

Welterweight contenders will be in the spotlight on July 29 when Golden Boy Promotions hosts another event on ESPN from Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Ariz. Sadam Ali will take on Johan Perez in the 10-round main event.

Ali (24-1, 14 KOs) came up short in his first world championship battle when Jessie Vargas stopped him in the ninth. That bout, which was for the vacant WBO welterweight strap, was a roadblock for the Brooklyn native, but he has since rebounded with two consecutive wins. His most recent outing was a third-round knockout of Jorge Silva in January and “World Kid” is ready to get back into the swing of things.

“A win in this fight puts me right back in position to compete for a world championship,” Ali, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, said. “I can't wait to get back in the ring and demonstrate the speed and power that has led me to be a top contender in the welterweight division.”

Perez (22-3-4, 15 KOs) has been in the ring with some of the best of the division throughout his career, so taking on Ali shouldn’t be that big of a shock to the Venezuelan. Though he came up short against Mauricio Herrera, Dmitry Mikhaylenko and Pablo Cesar Cano, Perez holds wins over Paul Spadafora, Steve Forbes, both former world champions, and Yoshihiro Kamegai. Perez is confident of a win.

“The time has come for me to re-establish my name in the welterweight division, and that's exactly what I'm planning to do on July 29,” Perez said. “Whether it's by knockout or decision, when the fight comes to an end, I know I will have my hand raised in victory.”

Super welterweight contender Patrick Teixeira (26-1, 22 KOs) and super bantamweight Pablo Rubio Jr. (9-0, 3 KOs) are slated for the televised portion of the card, though no opponent for either man has been announced.

In revealed off-TV action, Eben Vargas (5-0, 3 KOs) will take on a welterweight yet to be named; Daquan Arnett (15-1, 9 KOs) will face fellow super welterweight Jorge “Pantera” Silva (21-13-2, 17 KOs); and Miguel Angel Gonzalez (20-2, 17 KOs) will be in action at super featherweight.

The action will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes at 12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT while ESPN3 will stream the prelims live starting at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 PT.
