On Oct. 25, 2014, the Ultimate Fighting Championship went down to Rio de Janeiro for UFC 179.

In the main event, Jose Aldo looked to defend his featherweight title in a rematch against Chad Mendes, whom he had defeated two years prior. Ultimately, the champion did enough to defeat Mendes a second time, retaining his title with a unanimous decision victory. The co-main event was a light heavyweight scrap where Phil Davis beat Glover Teixeira by decision.

The rest of the main card saw Fabio Maldonado TKO Hans Stringer, Darren Elkins beat Lucas Martins by decision and Beneil Dariush beat Diego Ferreira.

UFC 179 also featured a bevy of top contenders like Neil Magny, Wilson Reis, Andre Fili, Gilbert Burns and Anthony Rocco Martin, who opened up the card.

The pay-per-view had an estimated butyrate of 180,00 with 11,415 people in attendance.
