Reverberations are still being felt a week after Alexander Gustafsson nearly took the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight crown from Jon Jones.
Jones retained his title with a controversial unanimous decision in the UFC 165 main event on Sept. 21 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, sweeping the scorecards by 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47 marks. Gustafsson’s success in defeat -- he cut Jones over the right eye and had him backpedaling in the face of relentless punching combinations -- have led many to question whether or not Jones could maintain his level of effectiveness if he ever decides to transition to the heavyweight division.
Though a move once seemed inevitable, “Bones” has plenty of work left to do at 205 pounds. The 26-year-old champion will next defend his title against Glover Teixeira, likely in February. Should he pass that test, a rematch with Gustafsson looms.
