Will Gina Carano return to MMA? | Photo: Terry Goodlad

Gina Carano has not fought inside a cage in nearly five years, yet she seems to be on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s short list of potential opponents for UFC women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey.

Rousey will defend her title against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 this summer. However, UFC President Dana White has openly supported the idea of Carano receiving an immediate crack at the gold.

“I do think she does [deserve it].” White said following the post-fight press conference for UFC on Fox 11 on April 19. “She’s legit; everybody knows she’s legit. When I met with her, if some of these people said half the s--- to me that she said to me when we met, I’d love it. I love what she had to say, and I’m excited. I hope I get a deal done with her.”

Carano has made a successful transition to the big screen since leaving the mixed martial arts scene, starring in “Fast & Furious 6,” “Haywire” and “In the Blood.” The 32-year-old Dallas native has not competed in MMA since succumbing to first-round punches from Cristiane Justino under the Strikeforce banner in August 2009. Carano won her first seven professional bouts, finishing four of them.
