By the middle of the second round, it had become clear all was not well with Chad Mendes. Something was amiss.
The Team Alpha Male featherweight grinded his way to a unanimous decision over Nik Lentz at UFC on Fox 9 “Johnson vs. Benavidez 2” on Saturday at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif. Mendes, who had Lentz reeling with a series of power punches in the first round, swept the scorecards by 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 marks. Afterward, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White revealed via Twitter that Mendes told matchmaker Joe Silva he was battling cold- and flu-like symptoms.
If true, such an illness would provide a reason for Mendes’ diminished offensive output in rounds two and three, where the two-time NCAA All-American relied on takedowns and top control against Lentz. The 28-year-old Hanford, Calif., native has won five fights in a row since being knocked out by featherweight champion Jose Aldo in January 2012.
