Verhoeven to Defend Heavyweight Title Against Silva at Glory 33

Glory has unveiled the featured bout for its next event: heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven will defend his throne against veteran knockout artists Anderson “Braddock” Silva at Glory 33 on Sept. 9.

For the first time in its history, Glory will be visiting the “Garden State” as Glory 33: New Jersey will invade the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J. As usual, UFC Fight Pass will stream the SuperFight Series undercard live while ESPN3 will stream the main card as it unfolds.

“The Tri-state area is a hotbed for combat sports and our last trip there proved that,” said Glory CEO Jon Franklin. “We've partnered up once again with a fantastic promoter in Lou Neglia to bring New Jersey's enthusiastic fanbase two high-caliber title fights on a fight card to be proud of.”

Verhoeven (48-10-1, 12 KOs) is hoping to defend his title for a Glory record fifth time when he climbs back into the ring. The “Prince of Kickboxing” captured his title two years ago by edging Daniel Ghita and has defended in dominant fashion four straight times, with his most recent triumph coming via unanimous decision over Mladen Brestovac at Glory 28: Paris.

Silva (40-14-1, 25 KOs) fought last week and earned his shot at the title by obliterating Gordon Haupt in just 82 seconds with a brutal liver kick. The Brazilian veteran was teetering on the precipice of journeyman after losing eight of his previous 12 matches. But “Braddock” has turned things around with a big win over Maurice Greene in February, followed by a disputed majority decision loss to Ismael Londt in April. His destruction of Haupt was the breaking point for his second chance at a world title.

Also slated for Glory 33 will be the middleweight championship between titleholder Simon Marcus (44-2-2, 24 KOs) and Jason Wilnis (28-6-1, 7 KOs). The women’s Super Bantamweight Grand Prix will continue as well when Zoila Frausto (4-0, 2 KOs) takes on Daniel Graf (23-4-1, 2 KOs).

Additional bouts for Glory 33: New Jersey and Glory 33 SuperFight Series will be announced shortly.
