Weekend Rundown: Ex-Strikeforce Champion Kaufman Triumphant

Former Strikeforce women’s welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman stopped Megumi Yabushita on third-round punches in the Armageddon Fighting Championships 5 “Judgment Day” main event on Saturday at the Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The end came 3:34 into round three.

A Zugec Ultimate Martial Arts representative, Kaufman bounced back well from her first career defeat -- an armbar submission loss to Marloes Coenen that cost her the Strikeforce title in October. Yabushita, a Smackgirl veteran, has dropped back-to-back bouts and three of here last four.

Meanwhile, King of the Cage alum Nick Hinchliffe posted his third win in four outings in the co-main event, as he earned a majority decision over Ryan Machan. The 31-year-old’s last three fights have reached the judges. Mahan, who has competed regularly under the Maximum Fighting Championship banner, will carry a two-fight losing streak into his next appearance.

Other winners at AFC 5 included Andrew Buckland (guillotine choke submission over David Perron), unbeaten Island MMA product Derek Medler (rear-naked choke submission against Jarod Milko) and surging featherweight Nick Driedger (unanimous decision over Brendan Frost). Driedger has rattled off four consecutive victories.

Assuncao, Oliveira Score Submissions at RFC 4

UFC exile Junior Assuncao submitted Wesley Murch with a first-round rear-naked choke in the Recife Fighting Championship 4 headliner on Thursday at Chevrolet Hall in Recife, Brazil. Murch, who has competed inside the Cage Rage and Ultimate Challenge MMA promotions, met his demise 92 seconds into round one.

Assuncao has won seven fights in a row, the last three of them first-round finishes. The 29-year-old Atlanta-based Brazilian was released by the UFC following a September 2007 defeat to “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner Nate Diaz.

Meanwhile, AMA Fight Club representative Rafaello Oliveira stopped Ryan Bixler on punches 21 seconds into the second round in the co-feature. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Oliveira, 29, has pieced together a streak of four straight wins since his unanimous decision defeat to “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 finalist Andre Winner at UFC Fight Night 21 in March 2010.

Other winners at RFC 4 included journeyman Arimarcel Santos (unanimous decision against Jose Rodrigo), Brazilian Top Team’s Janailson Kevin Pereira Lima (split decision over Marcos Vinicius) and the undefeated Leonardo Guimaraes (second-round technical knockout against Cassio Jacare).

Monson Outpoints Lopez, Captures ISKA Title

One-time UFC title contender Jeff Monson captured the International Sport Karate Association MMA heavyweight championship in a unanimous decision victory over Tony Lopez in the Fight Time 4 main event on Friday at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Monson utilized single-leg takedowns and his superior grappling skills, as he won for the seventh time in as many outings. A two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist, Monson had finished his previous three opponents inside one round.
