Magalhaes submitted Mike
Nickels with an armbar in the featured bout at Ring of
Fire 36 “Demolition” on Friday at the Magness Arena in Denver.
Nickels waved the white flag 1:19 into round one.
Magalhaes set up the submission with a standing combination, followed by a takedown into side control. Soon after, he trapped Nickels’ arm and left “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 veteran no choice but to ask out of the fight. The 27-year-old Magalhaes evened his record with the victory, his second in a row since a decision loss to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97.
Other winners at Ring of Fire 36 included Duane Ludwig,
who struck fellow UFC castaway Ryan
Roberts into submission in 2:05, and Anthony
Morrison, who forced Alvin
Robinson to tapout to strikes 69 seconds into their match. In
addition, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 semi-finalist Cameron
Dollar submitted Kit Cope with a
first-round rear-naked choke.
Riggs Takes Out Barnes at RITC 138
In his first appearance with Rage in the Cage in more than a year, Riggs bounced the overmatched Barnes, a late replacement for Eric Regan, with first-round punches in less than a minute. Riggs has now finished 28 of his 31 career victories, 15 of them by knockout or technical knockout, and has not lost inside Rage in the Cage since succumbing to a Travis Fulton choke in 2003.
Meanwhile, Joe Cronin captured the vacant RITC lightweight championship with a first-round submission win over Michael Bailey. The end came in just 54 seconds, as Cronin cinched a fight-ending guillotine choke.
Curran Makes Triumphant XFO Return
UFC, World Extreme Cagefighting and Strikeforce veteran Jeff Curran outpointed Tomohiko Hori by unanimous decision under the Xtreme Fighting Organization banner at XFO 34 on Saturday at the Lakemoor Banquet Facility in Lakemoor, Ill.
“The Big Frog” has posted back-to-back victories since his split decision defeat to the world-ranked Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 42. Curran, a 32-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Pedro Sauer, had not competed for the XFO since his majority decision win over Raphael Assuncao in November 2006.
