When Coleman entered MMA, it felt like a new military technology had been introduced that rendered whole armies obsolete. Coleman’s size, power and wrestling seemed unstoppable. He made ground-and-pound a dominant technique when previously submissions had ruled the ground. He used that ground-and-pound to capture the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title and win the 2000 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix. Coleman’s stubborn disposition and lack of evolution kept him from fully realizing his potential, but he had one heck of a successful and important career regardless.
