CASE FOR: “El Nino” is an appropriate nickname for this whirling dervish who has been in countless classic fights over the years with his aggressive attacking style. The longtime Strikeforce lightweight champion has only lost via decision and holds wins over quality opponents like Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Josh Thomson and Clay Guida. Many thought he should have won his title match with Benson Henderson at UFC on Fox 7, and he will have a second chance to capture Ultimate Fighting Championship gold against Anthony Pettis. CASE AGAINST: Melendez fought in Strikeforce for much of his career, meaning he was fighting very good competition but not always the best. He will have a chance to prove where he stands in the coming years in the UFC. VERDICT: Should he go in? He is already on the cusp, and it is hard to imagine he will not solidify his spot in the next few years.
