Dustin Poirier (15-3, 7-2 UFC) vs. Akira Corassani (12-3, 3-0 UFC)The Matchup: After back-to-back wins over Erik Koch and Diego Brandao, a matchup with Corassani seems to be a lateral move at best for Poirier, whose only losses in the division have come against elite featherweights Chan Sung Jung and Cub Swanson.

Poirier figures to be a considerable step up for Corassani. The American Top Team representative is a multi-faceted, aggressive offensive fighter capable of setting a tremendous pace both standing and on the mat. In his most recent outing against Brandao, Poirier gradually dismantled his heavy-handed Brazilian opponent with crisp boxing and superior in-and-out movement. When Brandao faded late in the first round, “The Diamond” capitalized for the stoppage.
While Corassani does a good job of throwing punches in combination, he will have to overcome his opponent’s five-inch reach advantage to land anything consistently. Poirier mixes up things well, however, blending punching combinations to the head and body with various kicks.
Poirier is the superior wrestler in this matchup, as well, and he will have the opportunity to display his aggressive submission grappling against a foe who struggles when grounded. The Louisianan is especially known for his brabo choke.
The Pick: It is hard to imagine Corassani outboxing the longer, more versatile Poirier, but that remains his best chance to win, because it will only get worse for the Swede on the mat. Poirier wins via submission in round two.
