Jamie Varner (21-9-1, 3-4 UFC) vs. James Krause (20-5, 1-1 UFC)The Matchup: Since returning to the UFC with a resounding upset victory over Edson Barboza two years ago, Varner has established himself as one of the promotion’s most exciting performers. Epic bouts against Joe Lauzon and Abel Trujillo stand out, although the Arizonan wound up on the losing end in both.

While Trujillo matched Varner’s aggression, Krause is going to be more likely to want to pick his spots from the outside. While his last outing resulted in a somewhat controversial defeat to Bobby Green, that approach worked quite well for Krause in his Octagon debut against Sam Stout. Krause is six inches taller than Varner, so expect him to rely on his long jab to help him control distance. In addition, Krause will employ leg kicks and push kicks at range. He also likes to set up a right high kick by ducking low; if Varner is prepared for this, he has a decent chance at catching the kick and dumping his man to the canvas.
While Krause is not always as active as he could be from the outside, Varner is going to keep the pressure on. “C-4” has heavy hands, especially his overhand right, but he will do his best work in the pocket. Varner should also have success working the body of his taller foe. Eventually, expect the Arizona Combat Sports product to change levels and take down Krause.
The Pick: Varner’s ability to apply pressure and blend striking and takedowns will make the difference, leading to a decision victory or late TKO.
