By The Numbers: The UFC in 2022

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has closed the book on another memorable year. What began with UFC on ESPN 32 on Jan. 15 concluded 336 days later with UFC Fight Night 216 on Dec. 17, as the world’s largest mixed martial arts organization continued to spread its tentacles far and wide. The UFC now takes a welcomed respite as it turns its attention toward 2023, which offers the promise of its own twists and turns, jaw-dropping knockouts, breathtaking submissions and unexpected power shifts.

With UFC Fight Night 217 on the horizon in a matter of weeks, a look at some of the numbers the Las Vegas-based company generated in 2022:

42: Events staged by the UFC in 2022. All told, the schedule featured 17 UFC Fight Nights, 13 numbered pay-per-views, 11 UFC on ESPNs and one UFC on ABC.

511: Fights promoted by the UFC over the past 12 months. A total of 242 of them concluded without a true finish: 176 unanimous decisions, 53 split decisions, eight majority decisions, three draws, one no contest and one disqualification.

171: UFC bouts ended by knockout or technical knockout in the last year, accounting for 64% of the finishes inside the Octagon.

16: Seconds needed for former Tachi Palace Fights champion Chidi Njokuani to put away Marc-Andre Barriault with punches at UFC Fight Night 200 on Feb. 5. It was the fastest KO/TKO finish—excluding those resulting from injury—under the UFC flag in 2022.

98: UFC bouts ended by submission in the last year, accounting for 36% of the finishes inside the Octagon.

30: Seconds needed for Dana White’s Contender Series graduate Sodiq Yusuff to dispose of Don Shainis with a guillotine choke at UFC Fight Night 211 on Oct. 1. It was the fastest submission finish under the UFC banner in 2022.

271: Significant strikes landed by onetime CES MMA titleholder Rob Font in a unanimous decision defeat to Marlon Vera in the UFC on ESPN 35 main event on April 30. It was the highest total posted by any UFC fighter over the past 12 months. Vera connected with only 159 such strikes in return but was credited with three knockdowns.

12: Takedowns completed by flyweight prospect Muhammad Mokaev in a three-round unanimous decision over Charles Johnson at UFC Fight Night 208 on July 23. It was the highest total for any UFC fighter over the past 12 months. Mokaev secured those 12 takedowns on 26 attempts.

8,827: Miles between UFC headquarters in Las Vegas and Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore—site of UFC 275 on June 11. It marked the organization’s longest road trip of the year. The UFC traveled abroad on five different occasions in 2022: In addition to Singapore, it visited England (twice), France and the United Arab Emirates.

20,845: Fans in attendance to witness UFC 281 on Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was the promotion’s highest such figure of 2022.
