By The Numbers: UFC 294

Islam Makhachev left no doubt this time around.

Some eight months removed from a hard-fought, five-round verdict over Alexander Volkanovski, Makhachev put an emphatic stamp on their rivalry at UFC 294, winning via first-round knockout in Saturday’s main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The Dagestani lightweight champion hurt Volkanovski with a head kick and sealed his victory with follow-up punches at the 3:06 mark of Round 1. Makhachev now has two title defenses and 13 consecutive UFC triumphs to his credit; he figures to have no shortage of willing challengers for his 155-pound belt in the months to come.

13: Straight UFC wins for Makhachev. That’s the longest-active winning streak in the promotion and it makes the Dagestani champ one of only eight fighters to author a streak of that length within the Las Vegas-based organization. Makhachev joins Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, Jon Jones, Kamaru Usman, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Max Holloway and Demetrious Johnson in this select group.

2: Lightweight title defenses for Makhachev. Interestingly enough, that is only one less than his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who defended the 155-pound belt three times before retirement.

24: Significant strikes landed by Makhachev. By comparison, Volkanovski landed just four in the abbreviated affair. In their first meeting, Volkanovski held a 70-to-57 edge in significant strikes landed over five rounds.

.820: Significant striking accuracy for Makhachev, who landed 24 of 29 attempts against Volkanovski.

7: Consecutive victories for Khamzat Chimaev, tying him with Movsar Evloev and Tatiana Suarez for the third-longest active winning streak in the UFC among fighters in any weight class. Only Makhachev (13) and Merab Dvalishvili (nine) have longer streaks. Chimaev took a hard-fought majority decision against Kamaru Usman in the UFC 294 co-main event.

4: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts by Chimaev. Usman had only been taken down once in his previous 17 UFC appearances. Chimaev was at his most dominant in Round 1, when he landed two of seven takedown attempts and logged 4:35 of control time. Usman, meanwhile, was unsuccessful on his lone takedown attempt.

13: Significant strike advantage for Chimaev in Round 1, when he spent most of the frame attached to Usman’s back.

10: Significant strike advantage for Usman in Rounds 2 and 3 combined. The former welterweight champ outlanded his foe 11 to 9 in Round 2 and 22 to 13 in Round 3.

107: Total strikes landed by Chimaev. By comparison, Usman landed 58. Chimaev notably outlanded his opponent by a 61-to-5 count in total strikes in the opening stanza.

2: Knockdowns landed in 4:17 of Octagon time for Ikram Aliskerov. The 30-year-old Dagestani floored Warlley Alves en route to a technical knockout victory at the 2:07 mark of Round 1. Aliskerov also scored a knockdown of Phil Hawes in a KO victory that came 2:10 into the opening period of their clash at UFC 288.

4: First-round finishes in UFC competition for Said Nurmagomedov, who submitted Muin Gafurov with a guillotine choke in just 73 seconds. Nurmagomedov has also dispatched Cody Stamann, Mark Striegl and Ricardo Ramos inside of a round.

3: Third-round submission victories for Muhammad Mokaev in UFC competition. When it comes to submissions coming in Round 3 or later, Mokaev is tied with Demian Maia for fifth most in promotion history. Mokaev tapped out Tim Elliott with an arm-triangle 3:03 into their third stanza of their flyweight clash on Saturday.

59: Career takedowns landed for Elliott. When he grounded Mokaev in the opening frame, Elliott surpassed Demetrious Johnson (58) for most takedowns in UFC flyweight history.

34: Significant strikes landed by Mike Breeden — including one knockdown — in the decisive third round of his knockout victory over Anshul Jubli at lightweight. By comparison, Jubli landed 11 significant strikes before the bout was stopped at the 3:00 mark of the period. Jubli outlanded his foe by a combined 34 significant strikes over the first two periods.

39: Significant strikes landed by Nathaniel Wood in Round 3 of his decision defeat to Muhammadjon Naimov at featherweight. It was a case of too little, too late for Wood, who landed just 11 significant strikes combined in the bout’s first 10 minutes. Naimov outlanded his foe by a 29-to-11 count in Rounds 1 and 2, while Wood held a 39-to-19 edge in Round 3. Naimov also landed four takedowns and secured 6:42 of control time.

27: Significant strike deficit for Jinh Yu Frey in a unanimous decision loss to Victoria Dudakova at strawweight. The former Invicta FC title holder has been outlanded in significant strikes by all eight of her UFC opponents and is 2-6 during her promotional tenure.

113: Significant strikes landed by Shara Magomedov in his Octagon debut, a unanimous decision triumph against Bruno Silva at middleweight. Magomedov landed 56 significant strikes to the head, 22 to the body and 35 to the legs. Silva, meanwhile, landed 65 significant strikes: 51 to the head, six to the body and eight to the legs.
