By The Numbers: UFC on ESPN 22 Pre-Fight Edition

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday will hitch its wagon to two top-flight middleweights when Robert Whittaker meets Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC on ESPN 22 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Whittaker, 30, enters the Octagon on the strength of back-to-back victories over Darren Till and Jarred Cannonier. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Gastelum looks to build on his momentum after he recorded a unanimous decision over Ian Heinisch a little more than two months ago.

As UFC on ESPN “Whittaker vs. Gastelum” approaches, a look at some of the numbers the fighters on the card have generated to this point:

128: Significant strikes landed by Whittaker in his split decision over onetime Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero at UFC 225 on June 9, 2018. It remains the only fight in which he has eclipsed the century mark in the category.

4: Gastelum wins by submission, accounting for 25% of his career total (16). His methods of choice: three rear-naked chokes and one kimura. Gastelum owns six other victories by knockout or technical knockout and six more by decision.

18: Knockdowns landed by Jeremy Stephens in UFC competition, tying him with Anderson Silva for second on the promotion’s all-time list. Only Donald Cerrone (20) has more. Stephens returns to the lightweight division in the UFC on ESPN 22 co-main event, where a three-round battle with Drakkar Klose awaits.

31: Seconds needed for Klose to put away Gabe Rodriguez with punches at Rage in the Cage 178 on June 6, 2015. Having occurred in the Fight Ready product’s fourth professional appearance, it remains the fastest finish of his 14-fight career.

42: Years of age for Andrei Arlovski. The oldest fighter on the card, he was born on Feb. 4, 1979 in Babruysk, Belarus. Arlovski seeks his third win in four outings when he faces Chase Sherman in a three-round heavyweight showcase.

14: Sherman wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 93% of his career total (15). His list of victims includes Isaac Villanueva, Jeremy May, Rashad Coulter and Jack May. Sherman authored his only other victory by decision.

25: Years of age for Jacob Malkoun. The youngest fighter on the card, he was born on Aug. 26, 1995 in Sydney. Malkoun draws Fortis MMA knockout artist Abdul Razak Alhassan in his second UFC assignment.

6: Sub-minute stoppage victories on the Alhassan resume, two of them having taken place inside the Octagon. He punched out Charlie Ward in 53 seconds at UFC Fight Night 99 on Nov. 19, 2016 and did the same to Niko Price in 43 seconds at UFC 228 on Sept. 8, 2018.

32: Victories between the three men—Khama Worthy, Matt Frevola and Michael Trizano—who have beaten Luis Pena. Only Worthy managed to finish him. “Violent Bob Ross” meets Team Alpha Male’s Alex Munoz in a three-round lightweight feature.

68: Total strikes by which Munoz was outstruck in a unanimous decision loss to Nasrat Haqparast in his organizational debut. The Dana White’s Contender Series alum absorbed 108 strikes from Haqparast while offering just 40 in return.

.729: Cumulative winning percentage between the 24 fighters scheduled to compete at the event. They own a combined record of 320-118-1. Gerald Meerschaert boasts the most wins (31) of any fighter on the card, while Arlovski has been saddled with the most losses (20). Advertisement
