By the Numbers: UFC 244

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 244 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Jorge Masvidal wasn’t happy with the way he earned it, but “Gamebred” is the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s “BMF” champion nonetheless.

Masvidal outlanded Nate Diaz for three rounds in the UFC 244 headliner, opening a huge gash over his opponent’s eye with an elbow early and continuing to attack from there. The end result was a somewhat controversial doctor stoppage after the third stanza. While Masvidal appeared to be well on his way to victory, the Miami, Florida, native already seems to be willing to run it back with his rival from Stockton, California. But first, let’s look back at the evening that was at Madison Square Garden, New York. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 244, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

4: Five-round fights to end at the 5:00 mark of round three in UFC competition. Masvidal vs. Diaz became the fourth on Saturday, joining Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock (UFC 40), Randy Couture vs. Vitor Belfort (UFC 49) and B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (UFC 84).

112: Significant strikes landed by Masvidal. By comparison Diaz landed 43. Masvidal outlanded his opponent 35 to 13 in round one, 39 to 11 in round two and 38 to 19 in round three.

125: Total strikes landed by Diaz, 69 more than his significant strike total. Masvidal landed 114 total strikes, just two more than his significant strike total.

40: Significant ground strikes landed by Masvidal. Diaz failed to land a significant strike on the ground.

78: Significant head strikes for Masvidal; Diaz landed 23.

2: Knockdowns for Masvidal. “Gamebred” floored his foe in both the first and second rounds.

138: Significant strikes landed by Stephen Thompson in a unanimous decision triumph over Vicente Luque at welterweight. “Wonderboy” really picked up the pace over the final 10 minutes of the fight, outlanding his foe 51 to 25 in round two and 55 to 14 in round three. That figure included a whopping 111-to-26 edge in significant head strikes.

42: Significant leg strikes landed by Luque. Thompson, meanwhile, landed six. That accounted for 54 percent of Luque’s offense in the fight.

13: Career Octagon triumphs for Derrick Lewis, who held off Blagoy Ivanov to win a split decision in a featured heavyweight bout at UFC 244. That ties him with Stipe Miocic and Stefan Struve for the fourth-most wins in the history of the division. Only Andrei Arlovski (17), Frank Mir (16) and Junior dos Santos (15) have more.

11: Lightweight victories for Kevin Lee since his promotional debut in 2014, tying him with Tony Ferguson and Beneil Dariush for the most in the division during that time. Lee knocked out the previously unbeaten Gregor Gillespie 2:47 into the opening round of their featured encounter on Saturday.

7: Finishes at 155 pounds for Lee, the second-most in the division during that time behind only Ferguson (eight).

10: Light heavyweight victories for Corey Anderson since 2014, tying him with Ovince St. Preux for the most in the division during that time. Anderson earned the most memorable triumph of his career at UFC 244, finishing hyped prospect Johnny Walker by technical knockout 2:07 into round one. Additionally, Anderson’s four straight wins tie him with Aleksandar Rakic for the second-longest active winning streak in the division behind fellow top contender Dominick Reyes (six).

22: Significant strikes landed by Anderson in the abbreviated contest. Walker, meanwhile, landed just one.

105: Significant strikes landed by Shane Burgos en route to a TKO of Makwan Amirkhani at the 4:32 mark of the third round in their featherweight scrap. By comparison, Amirkhani landed just 22 significant strikes. Burgos also held a 161-to-23 edge in total strikes landed.

41: Significant body strikes landed by Burgos. Amirkhani landed just one.

16: Takedowns defended in 19 attempts by Burgos.

.902: Career takedown defense rate for Burgos in seven UFC appearances. Despite allowing just three takedowns in 19 attempts on Saturday, Burgos’ defense rate fell from 94.2 percent.

4: Consecutive UFC wins for Edmen Shahbazyan, the third-longest active winning streak in the middleweight division behind reigning champion Israel Adesanya (seven) and Paulo Henrique Costa (five).

10: Career first-round finishes among 11 pro victories for Shahbazyan. That includes three of the Contender Series alum’s four triumphs within the Las Vegas-based promotion.

3: Consecutive victories for Jairzinho Rozenstruik, tying him with Francis Ngannou and Augusto Sakai for the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division. Rozenstruik’s three straight KO/TKO victories also tie him with six others for the longest active knockout streak in the promotion.

5: Fighters in UFC history with two KO/TKO wins in less than 30 seconds. Rozenstruik joined Johny Hendricks, B.J. Penn, Anthony Johnson and Mike Swick in this group with his 29-second finish of Arlovski.

11: Career KO/TKO defeats for Arlovski. Prior to UFC 244, the Belarusian had gone the distance in eight consecutive contests. Arlovski’s last KO/TKO defeat came at the hands of Ngannou at UFC on Fox 23 in Jan. 2017.

4: Flyweight victories for Katlyn Chookagian following her unanimous decision triumph over Jennifer Maia in a preliminary contest. That ties her with Valentina Shevchenko, Joanne Calderwood and Gillian Robertson for the most wins in the history of the division.

73: Significant strikes landed by Chookagian. The New York native landed 73 of her 180 attempts, a 40 percent success rate. Maia was far less accurate, landing 58 of 231 significant strikes, a 25 percent clip.

4: Consecutive victories for Hakeem Dawodu, tying him with Dan Ige for the fifth-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s featherweight division. Dawodu took a split decision over Julio Arce in the evening’s opening bout on Saturday.
