By the Numbers: UFC on ESPN 36

Jan Blachowicz returned to the win column in unusual fashion at UFC on ESPN 36.

In the midst of a competitive bout with Aleksandar Rakic, the former light heavyweight champion won via technical knockout at the 1:11 mark of Round 3 when an unfortunate knee injury suddenly rendered his opponent unable to continue on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Blachowicz has won six of seven fights since July 2019, and he figures to be an interested observer when Glover Teixeira and Jiri Prochazka square off with light heavyweight gold on the line at UFC 275 next month.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ESPN 36, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

12: Light heavyweight victories for Blachowicz. That ranks seventh in modern UFC history at 205 pounds behind Jon Jones (20), Glover Teixeira (16), Ryan Bader (15), Ovince St. Preux (14), Rashad Evans (13) and Chuck Liddell (13).

25: Significant strikes landed by Blachowicz in Round 1. That included seven to the head, six to the body and 12 to the legs. Rakic, meanwhile, landed 12 significant strikes in the frame: one to the head, one to the body and 10 to the legs.

4:33: Total control time for Rakic in Round 2, when he took Blachowicz down early and spent the majority of the period in top position. “Rocket” held a 10-to-0 advantage in significant ground strikes in this round.

3: Takedowns landed by Ion Cutelaba in 2:22 of Octagon time against Ryan Spann. Cutelaba couldn’t keep his foe grounded, however, and he succumbed to a guillotine choke 2:22 into the opening round of their light heavyweight co-main event.

31: Significant strike advantage for Davey Grant in Round 1 of his bantamweight clash with Louis Smolka. That total includes the only knockdown of the bout.

28: Significant strikes by which Smolka outlanded Grant in the second round. That momentum swing was only temporary, as Grant hurt his foe with a low kick and rendered him unconscious with ground-and-pound 49 seconds into Round 3.

9: UFC flyweight victories for Katlyn Chookagian, who passed reigning champion Valentina Shevchenko for most in the history of the division following a split verdict over Amanda Ribas. Of course, Chookagian came up short when she challenged Shevchenko for flyweight gold at UFC 247 in February 2020.

4: Consecutive wins for Chookagian, currently tied with three others for the second longest active winning streak at 125 pounds. Shevchenko owns the longest active winning streak with eight straight triumphs.

12: First-round finishes among 13 professional victories for Manuel Roberto Torres. The Dana White’s Contender Series alum stopped Frank Camacho with a vicious punching combination 3:27 into the opening round of their lightweight encounter for his first Octagon triumph.

9:27: Total control time for Allan Nascimento in a decision triumph over Jake Hadley at flyweight. The Brazilian also landed two of four takedowns and executed three reversals. By comparison, Hadley had 3:50 of control time, no takedowns and one reversal.

5: Knockout victories at 155 pounds for Michael Johnson, tying him with Justin Gaethje and Jim Miller for the sixth most in the history of the UFC’s lightweight division. Only Dustin Poirier (eight), Edson Barboza (seven), Donald Cerrone (six), Drew Dober (six) and Joe Lauzon (six) have more.

.620: Significant striking accuracy for Johnson, who landed 30 of 48 attempts. Patrick went 22 of 47 on significant strikes — a 46 percent clip.

20: Strawweight appearances in the UFC for Angela Hill, most in the history of the division. Hill fell to 8-12 at 115 pounds on Satruday, dropping a unanimous verdict to Virna Jandiroba.

48: Significant strikes by which undefeated Japanese prospect Tatsuro Taira outlanded Carlos Candelario in a unanimous decision win at flyweight. The former Shooto champion also outlanded his opponent by 68 total strikes.

3: Consecutive middleweight victories for Andre Petroski, currently the fourth longeset active winning streak in the division behind Israel Adesanya (11), Sean Strickland (six) and Andre Munix (four). Petroski choked Nick Maximov unconscious with a guillotine choke 76 seconds into the opening round of their preliminary clash, which served as the opener for the UFC on ESPN 36 card.
