A previously rumored heavyweight showdown between Andrei Arlovski and Frank Mir is now official for UFC 191.
The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the pairing on Saturday night. UFC 191 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 5 and is headlined by a flyweight title rematch between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson. Arlovski-Mir will serve as the evening’s co-main event.
The resurgent Arlovski has won three straight in the UFC since returning to the Octagon last year. “The Pit Bull” last appeared at UFC 187, where he stopped Travis Browne 4:41 into the opening frame of a wild scrap. The Jackson-Wink MMA product has also bested Antonio Silva and Brendan Schaub during his second promotional stint.
After a four-bout skid from 2012 to 2014 had Mir contemplating retirement, the former heavyweight king has won back-to-back fights to kick off 2015. The Las Vegas resident polished off Silva inside of a round at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 22 before dispatching Todd Duffee via knockout in his most recent outing on July 15.
