Hawn Drops to Lightweight for Bellator Season 6 Tourney

Rick Hawn will return to Bellator Fighting Championships in 2012 as a lightweight.

Sherdog.com confirmed Saturday with a source close to the fighter that Season 4 welterweight tournament finalist Hawn will make the drop to 155 pounds in order to compete in the Chicago-based promotion’s sixth-season lightweight draw. MMAJunkie.com first reported the news on Saturday morning.

Bellator’s sixth season is expected to host at least four tournaments, with eight-man brackets in the lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and featherweight divisions. A fifth weight could be added to the season, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has stated, but it is unknown at this time which weight class is being considered for that slot.

An American judo representative at the 2004 Olympic Games, Hawn suffered the first loss of his MMA career when he was bested in the Season 4 welterweight finals by Jay Hieron this past May.

Prior to that setback, Hawn had been perfect through eleven professional outings. After earning an impressive knockout victory over LeVon Maynard in his 2010 Bellator debut, the 35-year-old outpointed fellow judoka Jim Wallhead and onetime welterweight champion Lyman Good to advance to the tournament final.
