Ian Garry and Joaquin Buckley seem to be developing a little bit of a beef.
Buckley was unimpressed by Garry’s unanimous decision win over Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City last weekend. Garry maintained distance and put on a one-sided technical masterclass before surviving a last-round flurry from “The Nightmare.” Buckley accused Garry of playing it safe and running away from Prates throughout the fight. Buckley believes Garry could have produced a “Performance of the Night” kind of bout but was too scared to do it.
Garry dismissed Buckley’s comments as mere clout chasing. The Irishman claims “New Mansa” cannot generate enough hype by himself and tries to piggyback off other people’s stardom. Garry advised Buckley to focus on his upcoming fight with Kamaru Usman instead of trying to create content. “The Future” also didn’t rule out a future potential clash with Buckley. As for the Usman matchup, Garry predicts Buckley to “run through” the former welterweight champ.
“It’s just desperation,” Garry told Ariel Helwani. “That’s all it is, it’s quite sad. It’s desperation. He can’t generate enough talk about himself… so he tries to piggyback off other people. It’s okay, let him be him… My man’s focusing on trying to get all the content he can with me this weekend. Meanwhile, he’s got a fight, focus on this fight, get this fight done and then we’ll see what the future does… Meanwhile, I think he runs through Usman. I don’t think he [just] wins, I think he demolishes him.”
Garry is 9-1 in the UFC and bounced back from his lone career loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov last weekend. Meanwhile, Buckley and Usman will headline UFC Atlanta on June 14 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Buckley is riding a six-fight winning streak with four finishes and is coming off a TKO win over Colby Covington.
