Report: Edgar-Maynard 3 Ticketed for UFC 130

An anticipated third matchup between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (Pictured) and Gray Maynard appears to be ticketed for UFC 130 on May 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The two world-ranked lightweights engaged in a riveting five-round draw at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day. Edgar, who survived a harrowing first-round onslaught from the challenger, was suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after sustaining a nasal fracture during the encounter but may be cleared early by a physician. MMAFighting.com on Friday was first to report the proposed rematch.

Entering the UFC 125 headliner, Edgar had rattled off five wins in a row, including consecutive victories over former two-division champion B.J. Penn. The 29-year-old Toms River, N.J., native defeated Penn at UFC 112 in April to capture the lightweight crown and then turned away the Hawaiian in his first title defense four months later. An accomplished amateur wrestler, Edgar was a four-time national qualifier at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Wins over AMA Fight Club standout Jim Miller, Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts product Tyson Griffin, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Mark Bocek and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk strengthen his resume as one of the world’s top pound-for-pound mixed martial artists. Edgar suffered his only career setback in a unanimous decision defeat to Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 in April 2008.

The draw at UFC 125 snapped an eight-fight winning streak for Maynard. The 31-year-old Xtreme Couture representative was a three-time collegiate All-American wrestler at Michigan State University, where he teamed with former UFC light heavyweight king Rashad Evans. Maynard owns notable victories against two-time UFC lightweight title contender Kenny Florian, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner Nate Diaz and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Roger Huerta.
