Rising lightweight Tony Ferguson will go in search of his sixth straight win when he faces former Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson at an upcoming UFC Fight Night.
Ultimate Fighting Championship officials Monday announced the matchup, which is the first bout to be added to the promotion’s July 15 event at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
Ferguson won the 13th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” as a welterweight before dropping back to 155 pounds, where he has emerged victorious from seven of his eight outings. The rangy Californian last saw action on Feb. 28, when “El Cucuy” notched the most significant win of his career by submitting divisional stalwart Gleison Tibau with a first-round arm-triangle choke.
Thomson will attempt to halt a two-fight skid after dropping split decisions to Benson Henderson and Bobby Green in 2014. The American Kickboxing Academy product was slated to meet Gilbert Burns on March 21 but withdrew from the bout due to an undisclosed injury.
