A middleweight showdown between Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold is in the works for a UFC event sometime later this year.
UFC light heavyweight Daniel Cormier, who is Rockhold’s teammate at the American Kickboxing Academy, first reported the bout during Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight. It is currently unclear as to when or where such a matchup would take place. Cormier said the fight is being “discussed internally” within the promotion.
A former light heavyweight champion, Machida recently came up short in his bid for 185-pound gold, dropping a unanimous decision to Chris Weidman at UFC 175 in July. “The Dragon” made the move to middleweight last year, debuting in the division with a head kick knockout of Mark Munoz on Oct. 26. He then outpointed Gegard Mousasi at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 15 before falling to Weidman.
Rockhold, meanwhile, had a rough introduction to the Octagon, as he was knocked out in his promotional debut by Vitor Belfort at UFC on FX 8. The ex-Strikeforce titlist has since rebounded, posting back-to-back first-round stoppages of Costas Philippou and Tim Boetsch in his last two outings.
