Weekend Rundown: Hill Victorious in Return from Leg Injury

They warned Corey Hill his mixed martial arts career might be over. He had other ideas.

More than a year after he suffered a gruesome injury inside the UFC’s Octagon, Hill defeated Jason Trzewieczynski by unanimous decision in a featured lightweight bout at Raging Wolf 6 on Saturday at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

A quarter-finalist on Season 5 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Hill had not competed since he sustained a broken leg in the second round of his match with Dale Hartt at UFC “Fight for the Troops” in December 2008. A 31-year-old father of three, Hill, who was a collegiate All-American wrestler, remains one of the world’s tallest lightweights at 6-foot-4. Trzewieczynski has gone the distance in five consecutive fights, losing three of them.

Meanwhile, American Top Team’s Luigi Fioravanti outpointed “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 cast member Shane Primm by unanimous decision. The 29-year-old Fioravanti has won back-to-back fights since his knockout loss to John Alessio at a Maximum Fighting Championships event in October. He was cut by the UFC following his technical knockout loss to Anthony Johnson 11 months ago.

Inoue Submits Lovato in Shooto Tune-Up

Shooto lightweight champion Takeshi Inoue submitted King of the Cage and Ultimate Warrior Challenge veteran Gerald Lovato with a third-round armbar in a non-title match at Shooto “The Way of Shooto 1: Like a Tiger, Like a Dragon” on Saturday at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. The finish came 4:11 into round three.

Inoue mounted Lovato in the third round and transitioned to an armbar for the tapout. The 29-year-old Inoue has rattled off four consecutive victories, the last three of them finishes, since his surprising 2008 defeat to Savant Young.

In the featured attraction, Taiki Tsuchiya defeated Hideki Kadowaki by unanimous decision to capture the Shooto Pacific Rim 143-pound championship. The 25-year-old Tsuchiya will ride a three-fight winning streak into his next appearance.
