With ‘Ninja’ Injured, Waldburger Meets Newcomer Stumpf in Bayou

Only five days before a scheduled showdown with T.J. Waldburger in New Orleans, an unspecified injury has forced welterweight Daniel “Ninja” Roberts to withdraw from the event.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Roberts opined on his Twitter account, offering no further comment on the injury.

UFC officials confirmed the news on Monday, simultaneously announcing that Roberts will be replaced by new signee Mike Stumpf in the matchup.

Stumpf (Pictured) and Waldburger will meet this Saturday on the Facebook-streamed undercard of UFC Fight Night 25 at New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The show is set to be headlined by a welterweight clash between Jake Shields and Jake Ellenberger.

Waldburger will look to get back on track following a 95-second stoppage loss to Johny Hendricks at UFC Fight Night 24 in March. The 23-year-old Texan impressed in his September 2010 Octagon debut, handing touted grappler David Mitchell the first loss of his career in a unanimous decision.

A member of Jeff Curran’s Crystal Lake, Ill.-based squad, Stumpf returned in May from a two-and-a-half-year hiatus with a win over Dan Bolden in Curran’s Xtreme Fighting Organization. Stumpf’s 11-2 record includes seven submissions and two knockouts, while his only defeats have come by way of decision.
