Rewind: Cung Le
Cung Le was that that rare martial arts sensation before there was mixed martial arts. The native of Vietnam took his adopted hometown of San Jose, California by storm with matinee idol looks, an adonis physique, and a cinema-grade repertoire of spinning kicks, body scissor takedowns, and hard punches in the rings of San Shou.
You could say mixed martial arts was sort of a mid-life crisis challenge for Le, and at 41, he finds himself representing the sport's leading organization as the UFC dips its toe into the vast waters of the Chinese fight market as the Dana White esque ringleader of Ultimate Fighter China, a venture as rich with growing pains as it is with potential.
From the silver screen to the San Shou ring to the Octagon, the Vietnam refugee has truly mixed the martial arts, and capitalized on the opportunities they present to inspire.
On the latest Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind," host Jack Encarnacao welcomes Le to the Sunday Sitdown for in-depth chat about his upbringing and his coming up, the art of the spinning attack, and where the future of the sport is pointed as it embarks on new frontiers.
