Adonis Stevenson Obliterates Fonfara in Rematch to Retain 175-Pound Title

Adonis Stevenson vowed to turn Andrzej Fonfara into minced meet in their rematch on Saturday night and he did. “Superman” electrified his hometown fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal as he flattened the Polish challenger in the second round and he made it look rather easy.

Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) dropped Fonfara in the opening frame with a blistering combo to the head and nearly took him out moments later. Fanfara (29-5, 17 KOs) was resilient enough to hang on and continue, but his fortunes never improved. Stevenson, sensing an early stoppage, swarmed his foe and unloaded a whirlwind of punishment to the head and body as soon as the following frame began, so much so that Fonfara’s trainer Virgil Hunter had to throw in the towel.

The official time of the TKO was just 28 ticks into the second round to retain his WBC light heavyweight title. Now the boxing world awaits to see if he’ll fight the winner of Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev later this month.

In the Showtime-televised co-feature, 2008 Olympian Eleider Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) was tricky and effective against former world champion Jean Pascal as he toppled the Montreal resident via majority decision over 12 rounds. Alvarez utilized great footwork and head movement behind precision punching to keep Pascal (31-5-1, 18 KOs) out of synch for most of the fight. Pascal had his moments, but it was Eleider who prevailed with scores of 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112. The Colombian is the No. 1 contender for Stevenson’s title.
