This Day in MMA History: Sept. 14
On this date in 2013, Cage Warriors Fighting Championship decided to hold a bantamweight tournament. The promotion went to Cardiff, Wales, for the event, and it was Welsh fighter Brett Johns who ended up winning the tournament. He then dethroned James Brum and won the bantamweight title in his next bout.
Johns would go on to fight in Titan FC before debuting in the UFC in 2016. Johns currently sports a 3-2 mark in the UFC, winning his first three fights in the promotion but then dropping his last two to Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munhoz.
Also on the card that night in Cardiff was Jim Alers, who successfully defended his featherweight title against Martin Svensson. He defended the title once more before a three-fight stint in the UFC over the course of which he did not win a single fight. Alers has since been fighting in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
