This should be an interesting scrap between two of the stronger
strawweights on the UFC roster. Godinez made some headlines for her
crazy fall in 2021, fighting at a somewhat unprecedented clip.
After beating Silvana
Gomez Juarez in October at strawweight, Godinez moved up to
flyweight for a fight against Luana
Carolina just a week later; and after a narrow loss there, she
rebounded with a win over Konklak
Suphisara just five weeks later. Mexican-born and fighting out
of Canada, “Loopy” has some potential as a fighter who has been
developing nicely during her four years as a professional, but she
has had to walk a fine line during her UFC career thus far, needing
both a strength and skill advantage to overpower her opponents. The
Carolina fight should have been an easy win with Godinez’s powerful
wrestling and clinch work, but she obviously struggled with the
size disparity; and while Godinez was the strongest fighter back in
her debut against Jessica
Penne, the latter’s grappling acumen prevented her from clearly
controlling the fight. That makes for an interesting pairing
against Brazil’s Carnelossi, who is much wilder of a powerhouse.
The bricked-up Carnelossi sells out on technique in the name of
power and aggression, which has mostly worked in her favor thus
far. “Sorriso” walked through everything Angela Hill
had to offer until doctors stopped the fight and gave her a loss,
but Carnelossi was then able to overpower Na Liang and
Istela
Nunes for a strong 2021 campaign. This is a fight that is hard
to call on paper but could be settled early in practice. If one
woman can clearly overpower the other and take control of the
fight, then things are pretty much a wrap, even though it is
unclear who has that advantage. Without knowing that important
detail, Carnelossi may be the better choice despite Godinez being
the much more process-driven and technical fighter. Carnelossi’s
aggression should allow her to rack up volume against the sometimes
slow-paced Godinez and take the initiative for whatever clinch and
wrestling exchanges may occur.
FEELY'S PREDICTION: The pick is Carnelossi via
decision.
