Kamaru Usman may never catch the ghost of Georges St. Pierre, but he has already done enough damage himself to warrant discussion as one of the all-time greats at 170 pounds.

Usman, 33, will defend the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight crown against former Sanford MMA stablemate Gilbert Burns in the UFC 258 main event this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. “The Nigerian Nightmare” has rattled off 16 consecutive victories—a remarkable run that includes a perfect 12-0 mark inside the hallowed Octagon. Now honing his world-class skills under Grudge Training Center founder Trevor Wittman in Colorado, Usman has not competed since he laid claim to a unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251 in July.

Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Burns emerged as an unlikely welterweight contender after spending much of his career at 155 pounds. The longtime Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt finds himself on a six-fight winning streak that spans nearly three years. Burns last fought at UFC on ESPN 9, where he took a unanimous verdict over former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley on May 30.

As UFC 258 “Usman vs. Burns” approaches, a look at some of the numbers the fighters on the card have generated to this point:

1,784: Total strikes landed by Usman as a UFC welterweight, placing him fourth on the promotion’s all-time list at 170 pounds. Only St. Pierre (2,523), Jon Fitch (2,039) and Neil Magny (1,931) have connected with more.

8: Burns wins by submission, accounting for 42% of his career total (19). His methods of choice: five armbars and three rear-naked chokes. A four-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, Burns owns six other victories by knockout or technical knockout.

22: Years of age for Maycee Barber. The youngest fighter on the card, she was born in Greeley, Colorado, on May 18, 1998. “Deep Impact,” “The Horse Whisperer,” “Godzilla,” “Quest for Camelot” and “City of Angels” were the Top 5 movies at the domestic box office. Barber faces Lobo Gym standout Alexa Grasso in the flyweight co-main event.

10: Decisions on the Grasso ledger. The Invicta Fighting Championships veteran sports a stellar 8-2 record in those bouts, having lost only to Felice Herrig and Carla Esparza.

5: Middleweight champions, including Ian Heinisch, in Legacy Fighting Alliance history. Eryk Anders, Markus Perez, Anthony Hernandez and Brendan Allen are the others. Heinisch draws “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner Kelvin Gastelum in a three-round middleweight showcase.

2: Gastelum wins over former UFC champions. He took a three-round unanimous decision from Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 on July 9, 2016, then knocked out Michael Bisping in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 122 main event on Nov. 25, 2017.

20: Seconds needed for Andre Ewell to cut down Dominic Nichols with punches under the Gladiator Challenge banner in 2017. It was the third of five sub-minute finishes on his resume. Ewell meets Chris Gutierrez in a three-round catchweight feature at 140 pounds.

58: Combined victories between the four men—Jake Constant, Timur Valiev, Jerrod Sanders and Raoni Barcelos—who have managed to defeat Gutierrez. Brandon Seyler and Cody Durden fought the Factory X representative to draws.

100: Percent finish rate for Julian Marquez. The Dana White’s Contender Series graduate has delivered six of his seven wins by knockout or technical knockout, the other by submission. Marquez opens the main card opposite former Victory Fighting Championship titleholder Maki Pitolo in a three-round middleweight encounter.

7: Pitolo victories by knockout or technical knockout, providing him with 54% of his career total (13). They include his 48-second obliteration of Justin Guthrie at VFC 50 on May 21, 2016, his 59-second rout of Thiago Rela at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 68 on Oct. 21, 2017 and his 97-second blowout of Justin Sumter during Season 3 of DWCS on July 9, 2019.

37: Yeas of age for Jim Miller. The oldest fighter on the card, he was born in Sparta, New Jersey, on Aug. 30, 1983. Eurythmics’ smash hit “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 List. Miller tackles former King of the Cage champion Bobby Green in the featured lightweight prelim.

.751: Cumulative winning percentage between the 24 fighters scheduled to compete at the event. They own a combined record of 332-107-3. Miller owns the most wins (32) and losses (15) of any fighter on the card.
