5: Years spent representing his school in wrestling. This went on from fifth to ninth grade. He then pursued Brazilian jiu-jitsu to further his grappling aptitude.
14: Years old when he started training in jiu-jitsu. A friend
brought him to a local jiu-jitsu tournament, and needless to say, a
young Tonon loved what he saw and grew interest for the sport. It
didn’t take long before he tried a class and got hooked. However,
that gym was more focused on MMA and had only three grappling
classes per week.
Tonon decided to leave after six months to look for a gym with a focus on jiu-jitsu and eventually found Ocean County Jiu-jitsu Academy under Tom DeBlass. Later on, he would also train under Ricardo Almeida, Renzo Gracie and John Danaher.
5: Championships in three different weight classes at the Eddie Bravo Invitational. Tonon copped the tournament title at EBI 1, 3, 5, 9, and 11. He’s also won a ton of other tournaments such as Grapplers Quest, IBJJF World, the Pan American Championships, and BJJ Kumite as well as super fights in Polaris, Fight2Win Pro, Metamoris and FIVE Super League.
5: Years and eight months since he achieved his black belt. It was awarded to him by DeBlass and Almeida in September 2013.
9: Rounds spent in MMA competition. Tonon has spent his young professional MMA career solely at One Championship.
0: Fights won by decision. Tonon has never heard the final bell in his MMA career. He has never lost in five bouts with all of his victories coming via stoppage.
3: MMA fights in 2018. His debut year has been his most active so far, having competed in March, July and November. This year so far, he has competed in March and May.
4: Countries in which he has fought in as a professional MMA fighter. Tonon has been to different parts of the world as a grappler, but as an MMA fighter, he has displayed his skills in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Japan.
30: Current wins between the five fighters he fought. Engelen has eight victories, Lee has two victories, and Raju and Corminal have four victories each. Yoshiki Nakahara has 12.
