For the second consecutive fight, Alistair Overeem demonstrated just how frightening his ground-and-pound can be.

Overeem weathered an early storm from Augusto Sakai to pull away for a fifth-round technical knockout victory in the UFC Fight Night 176 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Overeem landed takedowns in each of the final three frames and put his Brazilian foe away with heavy elbows and hammerfists from above early in Round 5. The Elevation Fight Team product has won four of his last five Octagon appearances and could be nearing another heavyweight title shot.

5,418: Days since a UFC event last had seven bouts or less. Prior to Saturday’s card, “The Ultimate Fighter 2” finale on Nov. 5, 2005 featured a seven-bout card headlined by a clash between Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz.

9: KO/TKO finishes in UFC competition for Overeem. That ties him with Stipe Miocic, Andrei Arlovski and Francis Ngannou for fourth most in heavyweight history. Only Derrick Lewis (11), Junior dos Santos (10) and Cain Velasquez (10) have more.

33: Significant strikes by which Sakai outlanded Overeem (80 to 47) through three rounds. Sakai outlanded his foe 22 to 11 in Round 1, 24 to 13 in Round 2 and 34 to 23 in Round 3.

26: Significant strike advantage for Overeem in Rounds 4 and 5. “The Reem” outlanded his foe 40 to 19 in the fourth frame and need to land just five more significant strikes in the fifth frame to seal his TKO triumph.

48: Significant ground strikes landed by Overeem. By comparison, Sakai landed just two.

3: Takedowns landed in three attempts for Overeem, a career high for the Dutchman in 17 UFC appearances. His previous best of two came in a loss to Jairzinho Rozenstruik this past December.

11: Finishes for in UFC competition for Ovince St. Preux, who scored a highlight-reel knockout of Alonzo Menifield in the second-round of Saturday’s co-main event. That ties him with Glover Teixeira for the most finishes in the history of the light heavyweight division.

13: Light heavyweight victories for St. Preux, which ties him with Rashad Evans for No. 5 in UFC history. Only Jon Jones (20), Chuck Liddell (15), Ryan Bader (15) and Teixeira (14) have won more at 205 pounds in the Octagon.

65: Significant strikes by which Michel Pereira outlanded Zelim Imadaev in a welterweight showdown. The flashy Brazilian outlanded his foe 21 to 6 in Round 1, 28 to 10 in Round 2 and 39 to 7 in Round 3 before winning via rear-naked choke at the 4:39 mark of the final stanza.

.570: Significant striking accuracy for Pereira, who landed 88 of 153 shots. By comparison, Imadaev landed just 23 of 90 significant strikes — a 25 percent clip.

13: Career submission triumphs among 20 professional wins for Andre Muniz, who tapped out Bartosz Fabinski with an armbar in the opening stanza of their middleweight clash. It was the first armbar finish for the 30-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

3.39: Submission attempts per 15 minutes averaged by Muniz in two UFC bouts.

0:39: Time of Brian Kelleher’s guillotine choke submission of Ray Rodriguez in a preliminary featherweight affair. That ties him with Danny Henry for the fourth-fastest submission in the history of the 145-pound division. Chas Skelly, with a 19-second anaconda choke of Maximo Blanco at UFC Fight Night 94, holds the record for fastest featherweight submission.

7: Career wins via guillotine choke for Kelleher. That includes tapouts of Rodriguez, Ode Osbourne and Iuri Alcantara in the UFC.

3: UFC wins thus far in 2020 for Kelleher, tying him with Youssef Zalal, Merab Dvalishvili, Daniel Rodriguez, and Neil Magny for most in the Las Vegas-based promotion this year.

82: Significant strikes landed by Viviane Araujo in a three-round verdict against Montana De La Rosa at flyweight. By comparison, De La Rosa landed 85 in defeat. Despite those numbers, Araujo landed the more damaging blows throughout, attacking her foe’s lead leg and bloodying her nose for her third win in four Octagon outings.

5: Takedowns landed in eight attempts for Hunter Azure in a unanimous decision triump over Cole Smith at bantamweight. In addition to landing at least one takedown in each frame, Azure connected on 75 percent of his significant strikes (42 for 56) in victory.
