By the Numbers: UFC Ottawa

Stephen Thompson took another key step toward a UFC welterweight title shot by taking out a former No. 1 contender in enemy territory.

“Wonderboy” cruised to a five-round verdict over Rory MacDonald in the UFC Fight Night Ottawa headliner at TD Place Arena on Saturday night. The karate specialist was rarely threatened during their 25 minutes in the cage, as he controlled the striking range and perplexed “The Red King,” who was coming off a classic battle against Robbie Lawler last summer.

Lawler may very well be next for Thompson, but the reigning champion has business of his own to handle next month before any other matchmaking can occur. For now, here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “MacDonald vs. Thompson,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

7: Consecutive victories for Thompson, the longest active winning streak in the UFC welterweight division.

110: Significant strikes landed by Thompson. By comparison, MacDonald landed 61. “Wonderboy” outlanded his opponent 9 to 4 in round one, 13 to 6 in round two, 25 to 17 in round three, 29 to 14 in round four and 34 to 20 in round five.

71: Significant head strikes landed by Thompson. MacDonald, meanwhile, landed 50.

23: Significant body strikes landed by Thompson; MacDonald landed 10.

16: Significant leg strikes for Thompson. McDonald had just one.

17: UFC victories for Donald Cerrone following his third-round technical knockout triumph over Patrick Cote in the evening’s co-main event, tying him with Demian Maia for fourth-most in promotion history. Only Matt Hughes (18), Georges St. Pierre (19) and Michael Bisping (19) have tasted victory more often in the Octagon.

15: Finishes in UFC/WEC competition for Cerrone, who surpassed Vitor Belfort, Urijah Faber, Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva for the most in the combined history of those promotions.

33: Professional fights for Cote before being stopped by strikes. “The Predator’s” only other KO/TKO loss against Anderson Silva at UFC 90 came as a result of a knee injury.

3: Knockdowns landed by Cerrone. “Cowboy” dropped his foe once in the second round and twice in the third.

8: Media scorecards, of the 20 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the light heavyweight slugfest between Sean O'Connell and Steve Bosse in favor of O’Connell. Unofficial tallies were all over the place, however, as seven media members scored it for Bosse and five others saw it as a draw. The cageside judges awarded Bosse a unanimous decision.

244: Combined total strikes landed by Bosse (120) and O’Connell (124). O’Connell outlanded his foe 48 to 39 in round one and 47 to 28 in round three, while Bosse held a 53-to-29 edge in the second frame.

6: Victories, among eight career triumphs, via rear-naked choke for Olivier Aubin-Mercier. “The Quebec Kid” earned his second such win in UFC competition by tapping out Thibault Gouti with the maneuver 2:28 into round three of their lightweight matchup.

115: Significant strikes landed by Joanne Calderwood in her victory over Valerie Letourneau at 125 pounds. The Scottish fighter brought a halt to the bout with a kick to the body at the 2:51 mark of the period. Letourneau, by comparison, landed 80 significant strikes.

38: Significant strikes to the legs landed by Calderwood; Letourneau landed just 11.

8: Takedowns landed by Calderwood in her three Octagon triumphs. “JoJo” landed three of her six takedowns against Letourneau.

4: Consecutive UFC triumphs for Krzysztof Jotko, tying him for the second-longest active winning streak in the middleweight division behind only Yoel Romero (seven). Jotko knocked out Tamdan McCrory 59 seconds into the opening round of their preliminary scrap.

29: Significant strikes by which Chris Beal outlanded Joe Soto before he fell victim to a rear-naked choke 3:39 into round three. Soto landed his lone takedown in seven attempts during the final stanza.

140: Difference in total strikes attempted by Elias Theodorou (194) and Sam Alvey (54) in their middleweight bout. Theodorou relied almost exclusively on kicks to land 87 of those 194 attempts to win a lackluster unanimous verdict.

14: Takedowns landed by Colby Covington in his four UFC victories. The American Top Team product landed five of nine takedown tries en route to a third-round stoppage of Jonathan Meunier in their welterweight bout on Saturday.

77: Significant strikes by which Ali Bagautinov outlanded Geane Herrera in their preliminary bout, the fourth largest difference in UFC flyweight history. The Dagestani “Puncher” landed 90 of 124 attempts, a 72 percent clip. Fifty-two of those significant strikes were landed on the ground.

6: Fights that ended in the third-round at UFC Fight Night Ottawa, a new promotion record. The previous record for third-round finishes at an event was four, set at UFC on Fox 15 in April 2015.
