Project Spearhead VP, Union Supporter Kajan Johnson Bids Farewell to UFC

Kajan Johnson had a inkling that his run in the Ultimate Fighting Championship was near its end, and that proved true following a loss at UFC Fight Night Moscow on Sept. 15.

The seven-time Octagon veteran announced his farewell to the Las Vegas-based promotion in a post on his Instagram account Saturday.

“It is with sadness in my heart that I say farewell to the UFC. I spent the majority of my life trying to get in and once I was in I did it my way,” Johnson wrote. “I accomplished my dreams and did what I could to effect change within a system that greatly needs it. I am grateful for the blessings and the lessons that I was given and shown in these last [four] years and am truly a better man and fighter because of them. To all those that believed supported me, thank you, I love you. To all those that hated on me and motivated me, thank you, I love you. To whatever awaits me next, I am ready, let’s go!”

Johnson was an outspoken voice in the effort to unionize UFC fighters and was appointed interim vice president of Project Spearhead, the organization founded by Leslie Smith. Smith, of course, is no longer part of the UFC either.

Johnson concluded his promotional tenure with a contentious split-decision defeat to Rustam Khabilov at UFC Fight Night 136, his second consecutive defeat with the Las Vegas-based organization. The 34-year-old Canadian was entering the last fight on his contract but told MMAFighting.com a new deal was not discussed heading into UFC Moscow.

Johnson went 4-3 with the UFC, winning four in a row during a stretch from 2015 to 2018. The Tristar Gym representative is 23-13-1 over the course of a pro career that began in 2002.
