(PRESS RELEASE) -- Atlantic City, NJ – On Saturday, March 16, 2013
Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) returns to Dover Downs
Hotel & Casino when Delaware’s own, Travis Wynn
takes on Evan Velez in
a flyweight bout. Wynn (3-0) will try to remain undefeated against
one of the top flyweight prospects in the northeast as Velez (5-2)
tries to put this name back in the mix for CFFC gold. "We take
great pride in selecting our main event bouts,” exclaimed CFFC
President Rob Haydak. “Evan and Travis fit the billing for what is
going to be an amazing fight between two of the best flyweight
prospects in all of MMA."
Back in February 2012, Wynn made his pro debut with CFFC and three fights later, he has an unblemished record. Although he has fought exclusively for CFFC for his entire professional career, this will be his first main event with the organization. “Fighting for CFFC is an honor and a privilege,” said Wynn. “It’s a top notch show. Lots of guys fight an entire career and don't ever get to make it to a show of this caliber. I get treated like I'm part of one big family, so I love CFFC.”
Although Velez has the experience advantage in this fight, Wynn
asked for this tough challenge. “Evan is a top notch fighter at 125
pounds on the east coast,” stated Wynn. “I'm excited for the
opportunity to step up in competition and take on an opponent who
has fought some of the best and been 25 minutes with the champ
(Sean
Santella). I have the opportunity to put all the “TTP” haters
and doubters to rest. My main goal of course is to make it to the
top of the mountain and I'm going to get there one fight at a time,
beating each flyweight that they put in front me and continuing to
show every one why they call me The Total Package.”
After losing a controversial split-decision to the current CFFC flyweight champion, Sean Santella, Velez jumped at the opportunity to come back and make a statement. “I'm proud to be back, fighting for CFFC, especially in the main event,” said Velez. “I think this is a great thing for our weight class. It’s a great opportunity to show people what us flyweights can do.”
Velez is focused on the fight and it doesn’t matter who stands across from him in the cage. “I don't know too much about Travis Wynn,” said Velez. “I never get too caught up on my opponent or what he's doing. I focus on myself and my training. I know he's pretty tough and athletic. That's basically it.”
This fight will also be a new chapter in Velez’ career as a lot of the attention he gets, is questions about his split decision loss to Santella in what was considered one of 2012’s best fights. “Let me make something clear about how I feel about a Sean Santella rematch, because people keep asking me,” stated Velez. “I'm over it. I did want a rematch, but I deserved an immediate rematch and he didn't want it. I'm not going to beg the guy to fight me again. As far as I'm concerned, I already won that fight and I'm the champ, and he's not worth me "fighting my way back up". I'm the top dog in CFFC and in the northeast at my weight. My main short term goal right now is getting into the UFC. They've already called once and I’ll be ready when they call again.”
In other action, Joel Roberts (8-4), who recently signed an exclusive deal with CFFC will take on AMA’s Jason McLean (6-5) in a bantamweight tussle. Mike Stewart (8-4) makes his return to CFFC as he takes on Virginia’s Timothy Woods (2-1) in a middleweight bout. Also competing on the card with be undefeated heavyweights “Big Buck” Chris Birchler (3-0), who was recently named one of the top heavyweight prospects in the country, will take on Shelton Graves (1-0) from Maryland. In the battle of Delaware Bakers, Myron Baker (1-0) will battle Bruce Baker who will be making his pro debut. This card will also feature the long awaited pro debut of Cassie Crisano as she takes on Andria Wawro Caplan (1-1) in a featured women’s bout. Besides the eight professional bouts scheduled, there will also be five amateur bouts featured from the area’s top schools. Limited tickets are available for this event at ??????.
