Colbey Northcutt Talks Long Before One Championship Return

The sister of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Sage Northcutt will fight on April 28 at One on TNT 4.

It’s been a while since fans saw Colbey Northcutt (1-1, 1-0 One). When she last stepped into One Championship’s cage, she upended Putri Padmi (0-2, 0-2 One) via unanimous decision at One: Edge of Greatness. After that night, she had to take a break from competing due to the COVID-19 outbreak. While talking with Sherdog, Northcutt explained that the unexpected situation turned into a hiatus for a year and half.

“I was scheduled to fight in March 2020,” she said. “I was planning to fight in March, and then COVID-19 happened. That kind of just threw a monkey wrench in everything. The COVID situation got really serious down in LA and down in California. We’re still dealing with some pretty bad restrictions with gyms being closed and things like that. I know that since my husband and I, we own a gym ourselves. We had to close down ourselves for several months. That did put a halt on training, it put a halt on training-partners training. As soon as One allowed me to be able to have a come-back fight, I was obviously ready to fight when they asked me. The year and a half wasn’t planned, but it’s a blessing in disguise. I got to train and focus on myself and grow more as a fighter.”

Both Colbey and her brother Sage will fight on the same card, which hasn’t been happening since the days when they competed in the Legacy Amateur Series events. Now, the siblings have a scheduled bout on the upcoming One on TNT 4 card, where Colbey will take on Sovannahry Em, while "Super" Sage locks horns with Shinya Aoki.

“It’s been several years since we fought on the same card,” she said. “I get very nervous for Sage because he’s my younger brother. I’m very happy that I’m fighting first because I get to get it out of the way and get over with and then focus on him. I do know that it’s a big fight for him coming back, and there is a lot of riding on the both of us. Obviously, we both want to perform to the best of our abilities. Fighting on the same card with him, I couldn’t be more excited for it.”
